Eye Care Complex Supplements

1) FISH OIL: People often lack enough omega-3 fats (especially DHA), which causes an imbalance in the body’s omega-3 to omega-6 fat ratio. Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fats that also provides many health benefits. Fish oil contains two omega-3 fatty acids known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The ideal omega-3 to the omega-6 ratio in the body is 1:1, which is associated with a lower lipid count, healthier blood vessels, and reduced risk of diabetes. A 1:1 omega-3 to omega-6 ratio protects against retinal angiogenesis, the development of new blood vessels in the eye. DHA is a key component of this protection. With a regular intake of dietary fish oil, protection is nearly definite.

2) BETA-CAROTENE: Beta-carotene is a natural antioxidant that can also be converted into vitamin A in the body. It has multiple beneficial effects – it protects brain, eye, and skin health. It also helps prevent metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Higher blood levels of beta-carotene decrease the risk of developing cataracts, clouding of the eye lens that impairs vision.

3) LUTEIN: Found in all higher plants, Lutein is a Nutraceutical with antioxidation properties. Potentially useful for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) of the eye. Lutein is a xanthophyll and one of 600 known naturally occurring carotenoids.

4) ZEAXANTHIN: Zeaxanthin is obtained from eating foods such as avocado. These antioxidants may help protect the skin and eyes from UV and visible radiation damage. Clinical trials indicated that both the topical and oral intake of lutein and zeaxanthin can improve skin elasticity, hydration, and wrinkles. Zeaxanthin may play a role in reducing the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration.

5) ZINC OXIDE: Age-related macular degeneration, a major cause of blindness in the elderly, is believed to be caused by oxidative stress. Clinical studies have found that zinc supplementation can slow the progression of the disease, possibly by preventing oxidative damage to the retina. It has been suggested that zinc may protect against diabetic retinopathy (which can lead to blindness) by preventing retinal capillary cell death and neovascularization (growth of new blood vessels).

6) BILBERRY EXTRACT: Bilberry is one of the richest sources of anthocyanins – powerful, bright-coloured antioxidants. Solid research shows that this European relative of blueberries is fantastic for improving eye health and protecting against multiple conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and eye fatigue. Bilberry extract increases tear production and improves focus adjustment and night vision.

Ancient remedy recommended for use in diseases of the sight, weakness of the eyes, ophthalmia. In modern medicine, eyebright is used more frequently for relieving eye problems such as eyestrain, and inflamed, irritated, and sore eyes. The plant’s astringent properties and tannin content probably account for its usefulness as a topical treatment for inflammation, and the antibiotic and astringent properties tighten membranes surrounding the eyes, effectively strengthening and improving circulation.

8) WOLFBERRY EXTRACT: The health benefits of Goji, or wolfberry, include its ability to strengthen the immune system, improve eyesight, lower cholesterol levels, and control diabetes. Goji berry also provides improved liver health, cardiovascular protection, potential anti-cancer impact, and protection of brain cells and skin from UV radiations. The antioxidants protect the eyes from free radicals that may cause loss of eyesight, cataracts, and other eye-related disorders.
